During a disaster situation clean water will be hard to come by. Generally speaking water is the last utility to shut off during a disaster but you should assume that it will be off. If you do have some water coming through the tap, from your pool, rain barrels, or other items, you have to assume that it’s not safe to drink. This means you need to have some emergency water purification supplies or techniques.
It’s best to have a professional water filter and purification system. This doesn’t have to be something expensive. Most of the time for a few hundred dollars one can have devices that will purify hundreds of gallons of water even if it’s creek or lake water and make it drinkable. This is the ideal.
The less than ideal but still acceptable is to invest in some backpacking and camping supplies. There are many techniques like straws, pills, and mixes that can be used to get water pure. The thing you need to keep in mind is that you would need enough of this to have at least one gallon of fresh water for everyone at home so you may have to stock up.
If you can realistically make a fire or have a stove that can heat up a pot, you can boil water. It won’t taste good at all but after coming to a boil for a few minutes it’s safe to drink. Note that you will be limited by your wood supply for fire or propane supply running the stove. This is an option to keep as a backup plan at least since devices do fail.
It’s best to have a primary source of water purification along with a secondary one. You never know what will happen or how long you will need to continue to purify your own water. Most people don’t go weeks without water but it could happen so prepare today.
